Superpubblico DESC
(within Superterrestre)
DESC – Collective Spatial Exploration Device – forms part of Superpubblico, an initiative combining tactical urbanism, temporary architecture, and situated social research to activate and study public space. Developed through ongoing engagement with residents of Florence’s Quartiere 5, the project experiments with accessible construction and community-centred design as tools for understanding how people inhabit shared environments. The process began with a social research phase mapping local needs, everyday frictions, and patterns of use around Piazza Dalmazia and under the large market canopy. These insights informed a self-construction workshop in which participants built DESC, a mobile device designed as both a research tool and an attractor. Over three days in the square, DESC enabled interviews, micro-surveys, and spontaneous conversations through an informal, non-intrusive presence that encouraged participation.
Findings from this mobile exploration led to a final intervention beneath the canopy—an area previously overlooked and lacking basic amenities.Social research and installations were curated by Superterrestre APS, for a #superpublic city.
